Dear Richard,
This is my last letter to you, before I go to the Library.
Right now, I am convinced that what Mr. Epstein wants is the Interior that was built in 18-19 c and remained
through all aging process. I know now, that what I did till now, is complete miss. When I worked with Mr.
Ingrao, a leading decorator in NY, he would call me to finish the Interior like this. You have to know some
history of Interiors and how they aged over time.
None of this I can find in the Library, and I am sorry, I did not know to the end what Mr. Epstein wanted from
me until now.
The way he want to finish this Library, can not be finished initially with wax. Wax could be the last coat over
the finish that would closely imitated 18 c Interior.
Firstly, the oxidation ( in 18 c wood you have natural oxidation ) which can be easily imitated.
Secondly, the newer wood. The wood in 18 c was quarter-sown wood, you need to come close to this.
Thirdly, natural use of the wood, the dents, slight scratches, discoloration - done in moderation.
The present method we were using will not imitate the aged wood the way Mr. Epstein wants.
The way I see this work, is the present finish be removed, not everywhere, because there are some good
looking sections and you need to start anew with the final effect in mind.
I am capable of doing this work band if the need for the work like this, would arise , I could be called to the
project.
I am sorry that through misunderstanding, I was a disappointment to Mr. Epstein.
