See section 752 of New York's Corrections Law. While there are certainly exceptions as mentioned in the statute (e.g. direct
relationship between the crime convicted of and the job being applied for), it is generally unlawful to discriminate against an
employee or applicant because of a conviction or arrest. Individual states generally have their own laws on inquiries into past
convictions and arrests—as well as exceptions.
