I think you might consider the first partition of understanding to be the difference between competence and
comprehension. . i think they are different but play a role in your formulation. knowing how something will
behave , is different than knowing why it does. reaching for a glass is a competence. . the why is
comprehension. the physics might dictate the competence. the why might be merely a human mental construct.
developed by evolution , to provide a survival advantage. no more. no less.
