• Course Description: This course examines major scoping requirements found in the 2010 ADA and the
2010 CBC. The session starts with a discussion of what you need to know about the 2010 ADA and the relationship to the
requirements in Chapters 11A, 11B and 11C of the CBC. Next, an overview of key scoping requirements pertaining to
new buildings will be provided. The focus will be on occupancy-specific features needed in assembly, business,
mercantile, retail, and transient lodging spaces. Finally, accessibility for existing buildings will be explored in the context
of upgrade triggers and key exceptions that can have a major impact on design scope. This course will include interactive
learning activities, and mini-case studies as an integral part of the morning and afternoon sessions.
• Instructor: Nate Wittasek, PE, LEED AP, Arup <http://www.arup.com> - Nate Wittasek of ARUP has
engaged in accessibility codes consulting for over a decade. Using a foundation based on his in-depth understanding of
fire and life safety requirements from the building code, Nate has sought to develop a holistic approach to codes
consulting, wherein themes associated with life safety and accessibility are interwoven. Combining real-life examples
and graphical depictions to enhance understanding, Nate brings over 15 years of current practical experience to the
classroom. Nate is an instructor at the UCLA Extension, and an adjunct at the College of Environmental Design at Cal Poly
Pomona, where he has taught accessibility for over five years.
