2. All my thyroid removed this year, in two operations, one side at a
time. If first side was benign, then don't remove second half. You can
probably get by without medication on one side. Mine had ugly
cancerous growth on first half, but not bad kind of cancer.
3. Thyroid surgery does not necessarily remove all the thyroid
tissue... there are always some fragments left.
4. It is good to get rid of all of it, since fragments may contain
cancerous tissues.
5. Turns out, thyroid is the only tissue in the body that has an affinity
for iodine.
6. The endocrinologist plans the dose, and then you go to the
hospital nuclear medicine department and take a radioactive iodine
pill that comes in a lead box.
7. You are in isolation for three days... can't be in the same room
with anyone else. No sex.
8. The radioactivity in the Iodine kills all the thyroid tissue in your
body and there is never any more problem.
9. Several friends have been through this, some many years ago.
10. There are additional details in preparation, like salt free diet for
week or so, but basically, that's the story.
I I. I have schedule this for June, so it does not interfere with other
activities.
