"CREATION OF A BACTERIAL CELL CONTROLLED BY A CHEMICALLY SYNTHESIZED GENOME" by
Venter et al
SCIENCE is publishing a heavily embargoed paper at 2pm today by Craig Venter and his team.
It's a game changer. Craig asked me to give a heads up to our mutual friends. The final text
is attached as a Word file. I am on the Alcela en route to Washington and the 1 pm press
conference. It will be quite a day. Life goes on ... but it won't be the same.
Freeman Dyson, commenting on the paper on EDGE, wrote: "I feel sure of only one conclusion.
The ability to design and create new forms of life marks a turning-point in the history of
our species and our planet."
EDGE is asking it's contributors for reactions to the paper (250 words) which I am posting at
the following URL (also under embargo and password-protected until 2pm). I expect a lot of
reactions in the coming days. Feel free to send your comments.
