please let's talk about this.. It won't be that.. and few, if any, wives I expect... There are a few board members
who are from outside science, as I wanted you to be.. These include Mariette Di Christina, the editor in chief
of scientific american, who has to choose monthly what interesting science is going on and therefore I hope
will be an good resource, both for questioning people, and also for being aware of interesting people and
ideas to bring to the table, and nick pritzker may also come. Elon Musk is also on the board, but cannot
make it.
Here is the list I sent you in an earlier email. I am still interested in knowing whether you think Martin N.
might be useful to add to the invite list.

happy labor day to you too.:) just arrived back in phoenix last night, feeling alone and tired at the
moment... I take it you didn't like
my earlier crazy idea..

Interesting, while I was working out this morning I had planned to email and ask if you thought Martin N
might like to join the discussion.. he could help lead evolutionary dynamics session..
anyway, was thinking about cecile's email when I was working out this morning.. It will be substantive.. I
am going to
check with various faculty involved, but I plan to split the period into topics led by various individuals..
first day will be begin
with overview by me of where we are at, etc.. Anyway, here is rough outline that I am going to run by
people..
Let me know if you want to talk today.
A. Overview-Krauss
B. Topical Discussions:
2. Key Issues in Cosmology-Krauss, Freedman, Mather
3. Astrobiology-Anbar, Mather
4. Origins of Life-Anbar, Dawkins, Shubin, Venter
5. Evolutionary Dynamics- Nowak? Dawkins, Shubin, Venter
6. Origins of Human Uniqueness-Hill, Erwin
7. Social Dynamics, Cooperation, and Complexity-Erwin, Nowak, Sander V.
8. Synthetic Biology and Technologies of the Future-Venter, diChristina
C. Planning discussion: priorities, development
I would cut this last bit to a 1- 1.5 hour single session
Attendees:
Here is the list of scientists as of now. It is a small group:
Outside ASU:
Wendy Freedman- Carnegie Observatory
Neil Shubin- University of Chicago
Douglas Erwin-Smithsonian and Santa Fe Inst
Richard Dawkins-U. Cambridge
John Mather -NASA
Craig Venter - Craig Venter Inst.
Inside ASU:
Sander Van der Leeuw -Director, School of Human Evolution
Kim Hill, -Inst. of Human Origins and School of Human Evolution
Me
Possible additions:
Martin Nowak

Manfred Laublicher- Theoretical biology ASU

you keep forgetting to phone back... I would really like to address both your concerns about my own
efforts, and also the nature of the meeting, the latter of which I want to discuss here. We are constrained
by the fact that (a) invitations have already gone out to a pretty distinguished group of scientists, and
some others, and (b) we have already billed this as an 'external advisory meeting, and we are constrained
by that. They expect this to be an advisory meeting for Origins... If we somehow cancel this, after the
invitations have been made, we lose credibility with all of these people and damage the program
tremendously. Within the context of what you and I have discussed I would certainly like to use this to
explore interesting scientific ideas, and to set the stage for really interesting meetings.. namely to explore
areas where small workshops can make a difference.. to use the scientific expertise of this group to assess
which questions may be most fruitful for exploration, and which ones might benefit from different
approaches.. all these things are of interest to you too I think.. but this is slightly different than having
those meetings as themselves, which we will want to do.. So, I want to bring together this group and
ask the question, how can we have the greatest impact on moving knowledge in your disciplines forward
in interesting areas of science.. which questions should we focus on and why, and how.. It will involve
concrete science, not fringe stuff or 'science policy' that is why I broke down the agenda I sent you into
several key areas which seem fascinating, and in which we can actually do something.. We will need to
devote one hour at the end to suggestions from the group on where we can go for money for Origins, and
how, but that is not unreasonable I think.
Thoughts?
