Greetings from Palm Springs, where the baking is easy (I cannot figure out why anybody would voluntarily live in this
place).
I had a marathon interview session on Tuesday, started at 10:30 with the pickup and drive from SF to Silverlake Parners
HQ, and went until 5:00. A revolving cast of characters came and went. They appear to have bought my "vision" (integrate
the Center with Silicon Valley). It helped a lot that I talked to Peter Norvig (Director of Research for Google) the day
before, and ran a bunch of ideas by him. Although not everybody was equally enthusiastic about my ideas during the
interviews, the ones that were appear particularly important. I have to meet with two guys in NYC on Wednesday (they
couldn't make it to Palo Alto), and then I guess we'll see.
Meanwhile, radio silence from NYU. This isn't surprising: a) the head hunter told me it would take 3 weeks, which leaves
one to go; b) I was the first of the three finalists to be interviewed, and it took forever to set it up, so the 3 weeks was
probably optimistic; c) I'm not going to be offered the Dean job (I would bet on this), but Sexton (the president) wants me
there in some capacity — and he needs to come up with the niche (he's also been on the road constantly for the past two
weeks, which may slow things down).
Life goes on.
I hope you are well.
