I was indeed thinking of that when walking the dog.. glad we are on the same wavelength :)
(I also thought of the advantage of emeritus after retiring.. I could keep my office, have an assistant, and even be
a part of sponsored research grants)

I saw the payments—thank you very much. And I am delighted to hear that the Dean is sympathetic!
That's great! And as to prepping, totally your call. If you don't think it would help, then I totally
understand your not wanting to do it (or to pay for it). Just remember to be really, really nice and gracious.
You need to let people be able to retreat with honor in some way. Admit, as I recall we did in the
conclusion, that you've learned valuable lessons about power dynamics, the limits of open communication,
and so on. You didn't touch anyone and would never do that, but you have gained a lot of insight into the
changing mores, etc.
Also, please think hard about a compromise solution that would allow ASU to get a pound of flesh from
you while not ending your career forever. I still think a one-year suspension without pay beats the hell out

of where you are right now. Would I lead with that? Of course not. But if you're really getting pressed, I
think it's a viable alternative to getting fired.
Finally, you should obviously feel free to call me during the meeting if you want to run anything by me.
Good luck, and let me know how it goes!

Hi Justin:
I. paid the bill this morning as promised.
2. no need to talk tomorrow as we had planned. Heard from my mole on the committee.. Dean is quite
sympathetic.. and committee just wants to talk to me about possible options that I am interested in that
might be middle ground. I think these are things I need to think about myself and talk to Nancy etc.. but
wouldn't require advising from you at this time..(I know you have already indicated the option you liked,
and I know that, but based on my conversation with my mole, that wouldn't fly anyway, and it is not what
I wanted). Agreed? Depending on what happens friday, and then at the next meeting I will have with the
committee and the Dean, we can see what legal negotiations may be required.
