Generally, the IRS does not reply promptly to such a letter...or any correspondence.
Alternatively, you could do a confirm letter that would accompany the payment....as below...
"We understand that the enclosed payment of the balance due as per attached 4549-A along
with interest (per attached interest computation schedule) will close out this
matter with respect to 2012."

Barry- jeffrey suggests tom draft a short confirmatory letter to agent vs a call. Also, tom I was under the
impression we rec-d a "notice" from the irs, not a bill so there is nothing to pay at this moment, ie, bill comes in
