Subject: Sunday
I the heat of battle, I forgot to invite you--and whomever you want to being
along--if you are in the mood or in NYC, to
a performance of Bruckner 8 at Symphony Space at 4 PM this Sunday the 24th.
The format is unusual and often fun: I first give a 30/40 minute talk with the
orchestra on stage, talking about the piece using live musical examples. This
time I will compare for the audience the 1887 first version with the composer's
changes and revisions, which he made for the 1890 performance, as a result of
criticisms he received. A rare glimpse into the psychology and workshop of a
composer.
Then after a brief intermission (when I apparently will be presented, briefly
with the "gold" medal from the Bruckner Society--no money) we will play the
piece. After that, the audience is invited to ask questions, either of me or the
players on stage.
These things are often sold out, so if you want to go, let me know--I can always
get a bunch of seats.
