INTERVIEWER: You have been criticized for going too fast. Some have said that gradual
[change] might have worked better. What is your answer to that?
JEFFREY SACHS: At this point, in the year 2000, Poland has just had an extraordinarily
successful decade of change. It's the country with the highest income standards compared to
where it was 10 years ago. It's a member of NATO, it's a leading candidate for quick admission to
the European Union. It's a very vibrant democracy. There's a lot of foreign investments and a lot
of exports. I'm thrilled and believe that the Poles have acquitted themselves beautifully in the
pages of history.
