Ancient Golden Treasure Found at the Foot of the Temple Mount
Dr. Eilat Mazar, a prominent archaeologist at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, described the excavation o
36 gold coins at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem as "a breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime" event, dating the items
back to the late Byzantine period, or the early seventh century. The coins were found about 150 feet away fron
the southern wall of the Temple Mount in a ruined Byzantine building. Mazar, who led the dig, also uncovered
gold medallion bearing an image of a menorah, which could be the earliest Torah scroll ornament found in
archaeological excavations to date. Additional finds include a pair of gold earrings, a gold-plated silver
hexagonal prism, and a silver ingot.
