Subject Mayor Emanuel to visit Carl von Linne Elementary
To Friends of The Kitchen [Community]:
We have just gotten word that Mayor Emanuel is going to personally join a Learning Garden
build tomorrow in Chicago. Chicago is one of the hardest cities to be successful in. From
demographics, weather, politics, to a very challenging bureaucracy. We have had incredible
success there. Our goal was 6 Learning Gardens in CPS schools. We might hit 19 before the end
of the year, reaching 10,000 kids. As we understand it, the Mayor is amazed that we have been
able to succeed in the face of everything, including the CPS strikes. Internally we are being called
'the shining light in dark times'!

Team - Mayor Emanuel will be at Linne "Learning Garden" tomorrow between 115 and 130pm
tomorrow, for 30-45 minutes.
He wants to "get his hands dirty" and plant something with the kids.
I think CPS film crew will capture some B-roll, and they have invited local TV crews, as well.
I believe the Alderman will also be there.
Steve and I just had a great call with Mayor's office, and the Principal of the school.
Travis - I lobbied to have Beth Swanson attend as well, in an effort to get our 2013 plan in the
spotlight.
