2) Saint Denis, commune of Saint Denis, 6 miles north ofParis -- gothic was invented here in in
mid 1100s; windows with the purest, bluest blue ever achieved. ("The blue is the light," Viollet-le-

3) Notre Dame -- you know it, but what matters is the transept with the 2 huge roses, the
canonical rose windows;
most of the church is late 12th cent, but the roses are 100 years later & far more extraordinary.
