Some of the ideas in this essay originated in my earlier work
with Seymour Papert, especially the ideas about the construction of the mind through
exploitation of different agencies ... analogies. The serious study of "bugs" was perhaps first considered in the work of Papert on
early education (Ref. LOGO) and then in the doctoral theses of Sussman ... tautology, unworthy of study, to ask "why do we
like pleasure".
Seymour Papert has suggested to me yet another, more sociobiological conjecture about how
evolution might have gathered these ingredients
