el-Sissi. He is a Muslim Brotherhood adherent who rose to the
rank of general in Egypt ... weeks back. My column was prompted by the Wall Street
Journal's coverage of Sissi's appointment, which strained to put
a positive spin on an unfolding catastrophe.
The Journal ... freedom fervor. Even so, it was jarring to find the paper burying
General Sissi's Brotherhood sympathies at the bottom of a

mixed message appears unlikely to reverse the course of Gen. Abdel
Fatah al-Sissi, who controls the interim government and who is cultivating
a role for himself as a nationalist ... protesters were gunned down by security forces, adds to the
growing evidence that the Sissi regime is failing to establish its authority.
That failure stems directly from its attempt ... United States and the European Union to negotiate
with the Muslim Brotherhood, the Sissi regime is attempting to destroy the
Islamist movement by force. Hundreds of its leaders have been

In one scenario, army chief Gen. Abdul-Fattah al-Sissi would
become president with the traditional 90 percent vote claimed by
dictators from Gamal Abdul-Nasser ... former apparatchik of the Nasserist regime, is already peddling
that scenario. "Gen. al-Sissi is the best man for Egypt right
now," he said last week.
In another scenario ... Defense
Minister will be appointed by the military, not whoever is
elected president. Thus, Sissi could remain minister and exercise
real power as he does now.

"counter-terrorism" laws that ... more broadly, the policy is indefensible. In
effect, the United States is giving the Sissi regime a vote of

military coup, that the Sissi regime is "restoring democracy."

replacement, General Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi, other than the fact
that he is 57 years old and a former infantryman ... head of the military intelligence service. If Sissi, Mohamed

that none of this is Kerry's fault. It was Gen. Abdel
Fatah al-Sissi who hijacked Egypt's promised political transition. It was the
Assad regime that refused ... members of the Muslim Brotherhood after a two-day trial. Two days after
that, Sissi appeared on television, in uniform, to announce that he would
"run" for president.
